The Quevision system at Ralphs Grocery Store tells customers how many checkout lanes are open, how many should be open and how many should be open in a half hour. The system uses sensors to determine how many shoppers are in the store and estimates the number of cashiers needed. Ralphs, according to analysts, has been one of the few major traditional markets to fare well amid the invasion of new supermarket concepts. Analysts credit its speedy service, its lower price strategy and its assortment of high quality private label foods as key reasons for its success. The Southern California supermarket landscape is busting at the seams with dozens of grocery brands -- from Walmart to Whole Foods Market -- jockeying for a chunk of the $45 billion market. Since 2006, Vons, Albertsons, Ralphs and Stater Bros. Have closed 40 stores. Amid the contraction, Safeway-Albertsons completed its merger this year, opening the door for niche brands to enter the hyper-competetive market. The newest kid on the block is Haggen, an 18-unit Pacific Northwest chain that bills itself as a cross between a traditional supermarket and Whole Foods. ///ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Slug: SupermarketScene.0423, Day: Tuesday, April 21 Time: 1:37:23 PM, Location: Irvine, Get premium, high resolution news photos at getty
